Sleep Health and Why it's Important

But did you know that not only does sleep allow us to reset our vibrational set point, it also has many physical health benefits, some of which we will look at in more detail below.

As world sleep day was 19th March 2021, this blog post is in celebration of all things sleep related, it's benefits and how to get a better night's rest.

Sleep and Law of Attraction

Many people have heard of law of attraction or LOA for short, which at its core is that like attracts like at a vibrational level.

But did you know that a good night's sleep gives each and every one of us the opportunity to reset our vibrational set point each morning? When we sleep, it reduces the hold our thoughts have had on us during the day, so significantly that it provides a neutral start to the following day.

Action step

To make the most of this fresh start, before you look at your phone or do anything, take 5 minutes to just lay in the comfort of your bed allowing yourself to feel the support of your bed underneath you and comfort of your bed covers.

Then begin to count the things you are grateful for in your life, they can be small or big is doesn't matter. Allow yourself to truly feel the gratitude for these things, this is the most important part. Focus on how each thing makes you feel, allowing it to wash over you until you feel yourself feeling better and better about life.

If it helps, you can also write these down in a journal each morning.

Setting a healthy sleep routine

Before going to bed, it's good to have a routine that will help set you up for a good night's rest.

This can include

  • Products designed to help you relax

  • Turning electronics off 2 hours before bedtime

  • Having a warm bath before bed

  • Keeping your bedroom clean and free of clutter

  • Meditating or deep breathing exercises

  • Giving yourself the sleep opportunity for 8 hours a night

There are many products available that can help you relax before bed, from aromatherapy diffusers to body and face products.

Introducing Beauty Sleep Shower Oil
Available to order via my consultant website

The Beauty Sleep range from Neal's Yard Remedies Organic is a perfect example for such products, although I'm probably a little biased where they are concerned. As a NYR Organic consultant, I've tried these first hand and can't recommend them enough.

The blend of essential oils in these products has been specially designed to help the skin regeneration process overnight and promote deep relaxation.

And is available in other forms, such as a foaming bath, body lotion or body butter and overnight concentrate for the face.

All of which are PETA approved cruelty free, organic and a carbon neutral company, you can read more about what Neal's Yard Remedies Organic stand for on my consultant website, and should you wish to purchase any items from this link you will be supporting me as an independent seller at no additional cost to you.

Turning off your screens

Even night lights are often too bright and interfere with the body's natural internal clock, but even settling down with a good paperback book is better than continuing to use your phone, e-book reader or TV late at night.

If possible it's best to not have electronics in the bedroom, such as TVs or your home office.. Although I know first hand that this isn't always possible.

Ever noticed that you can't sleep if you have cold feet?.. This is why by having a warm bath before bed, it ensures that your feet are warm enough to allow the body to begin it's natural cooling process.

As we relax and our body prepares itself for sleep, the body naturally cools. But to do this effectively our feet need to be warm to allow the blood flow and heat to rise, as this excess heat is released from our feet.

This is why we kick the covers off in the night and you may often find your young children with their feet hanging out of the bed covers.

Setting up your space

Sleep hygiene is also an important part of getting a good night's sleep, as it allows your mind to relax and feel free from the stresses of the day. Making sure that your bedroom is dark and free from unnecessary noise.

"A cluttered life reflects a cluttered mind"

We all know how good it feels to get into bed with a fresh set of sheets on the bed.

It also helps maintain skin conditions such as eczema by making sure that bedding is changed regularly and kept clean, and should be changed more often if you eat in bed. And reduces allergies, which can be affected by dust mites. It's also recommended that you hoover your mattress on a regular basis to remove dust mite droppings and dead skin... Eww I know! But it's important to know..

Relaxing mind and body

Having a meditation or deep breathing practice before bed can set you up for deeper sleep, which is an important restorative time in our sleep cycles.

This can consist of a short guided meditation, listening to relaxation music and focusing on the natural breath, or bringing your mind to the present moment and slowing your breath.

Each of us are different, so spend some time trying different things out to see what works best for you, there's no right or wrong way.

It's also important that you give yourself enough time to relax and have a sleep opportunity of 8 hours, now I say opportunity because you may not sleep for this amount of time but it's important to give yourself the opportunity to. As relaxation is a big part of being able to sleep soundly at night.

Physical Benefits of Sleep

There are many physical benefits of sleep and I won't go into them all here as they are widely documented in other blog posts on the net and accredited books by experts in the field, so instead I've compiled a list of what I feel are the most important.

  • Reduces the body's stress response and lowers cortisol levels

  • Aids physical healing, from cuts and bruises to more traumatic injuries and illness

  • Reduces the plaque build up on the brain linked with Alzheimer's and Dementia

  • Improves concentration and memory functions

  • Stabilises emotions and mood

  • Reduces cravings for unhealthy snacks and junk food

I hope that this has been informative and helpful in your search for a better night's sleep.
